CULTURE/TRADITIONAL
Tanzania is one of the fortunate countries in the
world to have more than 120 different tribes all
connected with one lingua franca KISWAHILI, where
90% can speak and understand the Kiswahili language.
You will have a good chance to learn some normal
phrases in SWAHILI on the second day of your arrival
in Tanzania. Every tribe has its own taboos,
culture, and modes of living. Unfortunately, because
of modern technology, most of tribes have lost of
their native culture. There are still tribes who
practice their traditional ways of life like the
MAASAI and HADSABE. You will have the opportunity to
spend a full day's stay with a Maasai living in
remote villages where infrastructure is very poor
(Lake Natron).
Food:
Every tribe has its own traditional dishes like
green banana, rice, and makande (a corn and bean
strew/porridge) but Ugali is the staple food across
the country. Ugali is prepared from corn flour and
it is made into stiff porridge. Because it is
relatively tasteless, it is mixed with stews and
sauces. You will get the chance to test all
different Tanzanian dishes of different tribes of
Tanzania at about 12 different meals.
Music:
Every tribe has its own tribal music in their
language sometimes mixed with Swahili.
There different tribal instruments, most which are
used by almost every tribe are: Marimba, Zeze and
Ngoma (Drum). Unfortunately, there are few local
traditional music groups remaining because of the
rise of the new generation of music. Well known
groups such as BONGO FLAVOUR have
different of music tastes like Hip
pop, reggae, blues, zouk and rap music
add to this new music. You will have the chance to
meet at least ten Tanzanian new generation music
stars to talk with them, take pictures, and purchase
music. One CD costs about 10USD.
HISTORY:
Tanzania has the very long history before colonial
the colonial period, during colonial times, and
after independence in 1961 up to the present. You
will have the chance to visit historical sites and
museums in Tanzania. Although our museums are not
well developed like the ones abroad, you will visit
one very famous museum at Olduvai, where Dr. Liekey
and family spent time in finding fossils of early
human kind.
Bagamoyo is one very historic site in Tanzania which
used to harbor slaves and was a prominent component
of the slave trade caravan, which started from
southern, central and northern Africa. Slaves were
shipped by dhow to Zanzibar, the main slave market
location. In Bagamoyo, there is a small museum where
you will witness the rifle and chains used by
colonists to prevent slaves from running away .You
will visit Kaole Ruins, a fish market, and an old
German Boma. In Zanzibar you will visit another
slave market, which also has a very long history
with the slave trade because it was the main slave
market to bring slaves from main land Bagamoyo to
the Middle East.
Apart from Museum and historic sites, Zanzibar is
the island where the Arabs from Oman and Persia
settled for long time and today it still has a
population which is 99% Muslim.
